Hays High boys place third in Salina

SALINA -- The Hays High School boys' cross country team finished third Saturday out of nine teams in Salina. The Indians scored 95 points, behind team champion Manhattan (34) and runner-up Dodge City (43).
Derek Drees paced Hays High with an 11th-place finish in 17 minutes, 47 seconds, followed by teammate Joshua Brungardt in 15th at 17:57. Dallas Kaiser also earned a medal in 18th place at 18:09.
Kendall Kandt (24th in 1832), Jake Nelson (31st in 18:51), Landon Munsch (32nd in 18:52), and Blake Matthews (33rd in 18:53) rounded out the varsity for Hays High.
On the girls' side, Hays High finished seventh with 171 points, running with three freshmen and three sophomores on varsity.
Summer Smith finished 28th to lead the way for the Indians in a time of 17:40. Jenna Luebbers (17:53), Bailee Leiker (18:05), Shelby Matlock (18:24), and Wendy Zimmerman (18:27) rounded out the varsity scoring.
Hays High travels to Dodge City on Thursday for the WAC Championships.
