Hays junior Logan Downing pitched a no-hitter in an 11-1 win over Dodge City on Tuesday, and teammate Matt Malott pitched a one-hitter in an 11-0 shutout of Larned. Both games were played in Dodge City.
Downing gave up a single unearned run in the first inning of his no hitter when he walked two batters, allowed them to advance on a wild pitch and then one scored on an infield error. Downing settled down after that, however, and allowed only one more baserunner on a fifth-inning walk. Downing struck out six and walked three in seven innings.
He got all the run support he needed in the fourth inning when Sam Rohleder singled, stole second and then scored on a double by Taylor Pfannenstiel. Austin Klaus then singled, advancing Pfannenstiel to third. Both runners then scored on a double by Tom Rohleder. That gave Hays a 3-1 lead, and the Indians added seven more in the fifth inning and one more in the seventh.
In the other game against Larned, only two Dodge City batters to reach base on Malott- one on a second-inning single and another on a fifth-inning error. Malott struck out five and walked none and faced only one batter over the minimum 18 in six innings.
Meanwhile, the Indians jumped on Larned with four runs in the first inning and seven more in the sixth.
Rohleder swung the big bat with two doubles and four runs batted in.
