Oborny and Munsch win gold medals

NORTH NEWTON -- Both of the Hays High School track and field teams qualified multiple individuals on Friday at the Class 5A Newton Regional Championships for the Class 5A State Championships on Friday and Saturday at Wichita's Cessna Stadium.

Sophomore Josh Munsch and senior Trenton Oborny were the two Indians that captured an individual championship. Munsch won the 800 meters (1:59.33) and the 1,600-meters (4:34.84). Oborny was first in the pole vault (13-6). Senior Sol Jackson was second in the 400 meters (50.52) while the 3,200-meter relay was third in 8:18.33. In the field events, sophomore Tyler Rathke was fourth in the discus (142-5), while sophomore Emir Laroya was fourth in the long jump (20-8 1/2) and triple jump (41-8). Sophomore Brad Pruter was third in the triple jump (42-2 1/4).

Sophomore Ashli Dryden and senior Kristen Fleharty qualified in two individual events apiece for the HHS girls. Dryden was second in the 100-meter dash (12.82) and third in the triple jump (35-5). Fleharty, a Fort Hays State University signee, was second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.19) and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (48.68).

Hays High also won the 400-meter relay (50.37) and was fourth in the 1,600-meter relay (4:10.15) and 3,200-meter relay (10:32.24). Sophomore Erika Schmidt was fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.26), while senior Raena Sander earned the same place in the 800 meters (2:28.34).

In the field events, junior Summer Hobbs was fourth in the javelin (115), while junior Hayley Pfeifer was fourth in the pole vault (8-0) and sophomore Ticha Rebarchek was fourth in the shot put (35-8). Senior Blake Riedel was second in the high jump (5-0).

Overall, Hays High was fourth on the girls' side with 85 points. Great Bend won the meet with 109 points. On the boys' side, Hays High was third with 68 points and host Newton was first with 142 points, one point more than Hutchinson.
