Munsch Wins Pair of Golds

HUTCHINSON -- The Hays High School boys' track and field team finished third in a strong field at the Hutchinson Invitational on Friday. HHS earned 83.33 points, while Western Athletic Conference rival Dodge City was second with 115 points. Hutchinson, in the same regional with Hays High, won the meet with 144.83 points.
Sophomore Josh Munsch captured the titles in the 800 meters and 1,600 meters. In the 800, Munsch broke two minutes for the first time this season when he ran 1:58.01. It was a personal record and broke his season best by eight seconds.
In the 1,600-meters, Munsch, who set a school record of 4:21.99 last week at the KU Relays, finished in 4:32.78 and won by nearly six seconds. Senior Nathan Augustine won the 2,000-meter steeplechase by nearly seven seconds (7:00.91). HHS was third in the 1,600-meter relay (3:30.55) and senior Sol Jackson was fifth in a strong 400 meter field, finishing in 50.68 seconds.
In the field events, senior Trenton Oborny was second (13-0) in the pole vault and junior Tyler Riebel was third in the shot put (46-1). Sophomore Tyler Rathke was fourth in the discus (142-2).
On the girls' side, Hays High was seventh in the 12-team field with 62 points. Wichita Southeast won the meet with 123 points. HHS was third among the five WAC schools, finishing behind Great Bend and Dodge City.
Senior Kristen Fleharty, a recent Fort Hays State University signee, won the 100-meter hurdles (15.08) and was second in the 300-meter hurdles (48.99). The 3,200-meter relay team also took second, while sophomore Kylie Gaughan was fourth in the 3,200-meters.
