How do I add a printer?

  1. Click "Start"
  2. Type "printers"
  3. Click on "Printers" program
  4. Click "Add a Printer"

  5. a. If it is USB Printer select "Add a Local Printer"
    b. If it is a Network Printer then selct "Add a network,wireless, or Bluethooth Printer"
  6. Select the desired printer from a list and click "Next" (Skip to Step 11)
  7. If the printer is not displayed in the list, click "The printer I want isn't listed"
  8. Make sure the first option "Find a Printer in the directory" is selected and click next
  9. Click "Find Now" or you may narrow your search results by entering the name of your school (HHS, FMS, RES, Washington, Wilson, RAC, etc.) and clikcing the "Find Now" button.
  10. Highlight the desired Printer and click "OK"
  11. It should say "Connecting to Printer on Srvr1.internal.usd489.com"  (this may take a minute)
    (Note: If the printer still does not show in the list, the printer might not be setup on the network.  Please contact your building technician.)
  12. Click "Next"
  13. If desired check "Set as default printer"
  14. Click "Finish"

What do I do if I add a printer and get a error "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could no be completed (error 0x000006be)"

Plugin an Ethernet computer to the laptop and retry.  This is a known issue and is being researched by technical support staff.

 

What do I do if my function keys don't work?

You need to enable Quick Set. Please do the following:
Click Start menu (found inside the Windows ORB - bottom left)
Type "quickset"
Click on "QuickSet" program
Right-click the Dell QuickSet icon in the toolbar.
Click Open

I plugin my projector and my display loses color?

Right-click on the Desktop
Click "Graphics Properties"
Click "Display Settings"
Change "Color Quality" to 32-bit

I change my password but I can't login to my computer with the new password

When you change your password tool it may take up to an hour for the new password to be replicated to your computer.  Restarting your computer should force the new password to be applied to your computer. If you take your laptop home before the password is replicated you'll have to login using your old password until the settings update.

How do I insert a row in Excel 2007?

One difference in Excel 2007 from previous versions of Excel is that you are unable to go to the Insert menu and select row.  The easiest way to insert a row is to do the following:

Open Excel

Right Click on the numberered rows on the left hand side

Click Insert

How do I set default paragraph spacing in Word?

1. On the Home ribbon, click on the down arrow to the right of the Paragraph group.
2. Click the Indents and Spacing tab.
3. In the Spacing section, click the arrow next to the After box until the value is 0 pt.
4. In the Line Spacing box, select Single.
5. Click the Default button, and then click Yes when prompted.
6. Next time you open Word, your default will be set to single spacing.

I am still using my Mac at home and I cannot open a Word 2007 file

I can't find groups in Outlook because my global Address Book is not updating

Technical support staff is looking into this issue.  Until then please manually update your global address book:

Open Outlook

Click "Tools" menu

Select "Send/Recieve" menu Item

Click "Download Address Book"

Uncheck "Download changes since last Send/Recieve"

How do I eject/safely remove a USB drive?

It is strongly recommended in Windows Vista that you ALWAYS safely remove devices before unplugging them from your computer.  Unsafe device remove may result in loss or corruption of data on the device.

To safely remove devices please do the following:

Single left-click on the icon with green check in toolbar.  (See Figure below)

Click on the device that you would like to eject/remove.

Click OK

Why does Audacity not let me save as a mp3?

Open Audacity

Type desired filename

It should prompt you to select Lame codec, Click "Yes"

Browse to "C:\Program Files\Lame for Audacity" folder

Select "lame_enc.dll" file

How do I create custom distribution lists in Outlook?

Open Outlook
Click “Contacts”
Click down arrow besides “New” contact button
Click “Distribution List”
Type in the list name

Search for users in the Address Book and click “Members->”

How do I stop my laptop from prompting for a password when I open the lid?

Option 1 (recommended)

Right-click on Desktop

Click "Personalize"

Click "Screen Saver"

Uncheck "On resume, display logon screen"

Click “Require password with the computer wakes”

Check the box “Don’t require a password”

 

How can I increase my battery usage?

Right-click on the battery icon in the lower right of the task bar.

Choose Power Options.

In the window that appears, click on Power Saver and then Change Plan Settings.

In the window that appears, click on Change Advanced Power Settings.

Click on the + next to Processor power management and change the percentages to 100%.

Optional:  If you’re having connection problems, you can change a setting while you’re in the Advanced Power settings window.  Scroll up to wireless Adapter Settings and click on the + sign.  Change the Power Saving Mode to Maximum Performance.

Click OK.

 

Q: Does USD 489 have a spam filter?

USD 489 has a spam filter installed to miniamize the amout of spam that you have to deal with in your inbox. Each email message must pass as may as 19 tests before it is delivered to your inbox. On average, 80-90% of the email received is classified as spam and blocked. (approximately 41,000 messages everday)  Even with all the tests each message goes through, some spam will manage to slip though and show up in your inbox.

 

Q: I receive sapm in my inbox. Should I forward it to someone?
A: You may forward it to spam@usd489.com. Any emails forwarded to this address is reviewed and analyzed. As a result, the smtp filter's rules are changed to help prevent similar messages from coming through again.

 

Q: I have some friends that are unable to send me email. Can their email address be added to a white list?
A: You have the ability to manage your own white list and quarantine. You can login to http://spam.usd489.com/spamconsole using the same username and password you use for your email. From here you can add email addresses to your safe senders or your blocked senders lists. You can also unblock a message that was blocked by the filter. If you would like to receive an email every morning with a summary of your blocked messages, pelase send an email to jbitikofer@usd489.com requesting to receieve a daliy spam summary.

Q: I am confused about what my email address is. Is it @usd489.com, @hayus489.k12.ks.us, or @hayshighindians.com?
A: Any of the above combonations will work but it is recommended that you have email sent to at username@usd489.com. In addtion, by default any email that you send will come from username@usd489.com

 

Q: Who should I contact if I'm having problems receiving email from certain addresses?
A: You will need to know the email address the email is being sent from as well as an aproximate date and time the email was sent. If the sender receives an error, that is also helpful. Contact Jeff Bitikofer (jbitikofer@usd489.com) or Todd Bryant (tbryant@usd489.com).

I get an error "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resources that is unavailable" when trying to open Google Earth?

In order to resolve this issue you need to uninstall and reinstall Google Earth.  However, some computers are experiencing problems with Uninstalling Google Earth.  Please use the following procedure:

  1. Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe
  2. Right-click the msicuu2.exe and click “Run as Administrator” to install.
  3. Open the “Windows Install Clean Up” application.
  4. Select the “Google Earth” in list of installed applications
  5. Click “Remove” button
  6. Download and install the newest version of Google Earth

What if I plug in a projector and my screen goes black?

Press the blue "Fn" key and the F8 (CRT/LCD) key.  This will toogle the video mode from mirror, to monitor, to notebook.

How do I install fonts?

Students are restricted from installing their own fonts.  If students need fonts installed, please come to the CCU for assistance.  Staff please use the following instructions for installing fonts.

1. Click Start and type Fonts to open the font folder.

2. Copying any .TTF or .OTF font files into the folder. (C:\Windows\Fonts)

What do I do if it says "Your password will expire in X days"?

It is the USD 489 district policy to have staff passwords more than180 days expire.  If you get this message it is a warning that your password will be expiring soon. Click on this link and follow the directions to change password. If you are unable to change your password using the Password Tool because your password has already expired please contact technical support at 623-2618 or the tech person in your building.

 

How do I download videos from youtube.com?

The easiest thing is to download them from home or outside of the USD 489 and then download them to your computer.  This can be done by downloading Vdownloader or a variety of free websites.

Why can't I listen to MP3 files in Moodle?

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Choose "Options" from the "Tools" menu.
  3. Choose the "Applications" tab.
  4. Scroll down to MP3 Format Sound (It may be listed twice).
  5. Click on the Action beside MP3 Format Sound and choose Use Windows Media Player.
  6. Repeat step 5 for the any other instances of MP3 Format Sound.

 

How do I create distribution lists in Outlook?

If you have a group of people that you frequently send emails to you can create a personal distribution list even if there is not a list in the Global Address book.

Open Outlook

Click "Contacts" button

Click down arrow on "New" button

Select "Distribution List"

Type the Name of the List

Click "Select Members" or "Add New" to add contacts to your list

Click "Save and Close" 

The list should appear as an address in you Contacts
