Joel left behind two children: Josselyn Michal McLaren (19) and Jaelyn Parker Merle McLaren (17). Both children live with their mother, Geralyn Graver and their step-father, Randy Graver. They have a younger sister, Rhian.

• Josselyn graduated from VHS and Hays Academy of Hair Design. She is employed by Hairware in Hays.

• Jaelyn is a senior at VHS and is involved in football and basketball. He is also on the A honor roll. He also works part-time at the Via-Christi Nursing Home.
